Why birds are dinosaurs

The short version
Birds did not descend from dinosaurs the way grandchildren descend from grandparents in another family — they are inside the dinosaur family tree. A sparrow is as much a dinosaur as Tyrannosaurus, which is why scientists say 'non-avian dinosaurs' when they mean the ones that died out.
The shared anatomy
Birds and theropod dinosaurs share hundreds of features: hollow air-filled bones, a wishbone, a three-fingered hand, a backwards-pointing first toe in many forms, and a swivelling wrist bone that lets the hand fold sideways — the same motion as a folding wing.
Egg structure, nesting posture and even brooding behaviour are shared too: several Oviraptor-like specimens were fossilised sitting on their clutches exactly as a bird does.
Feathers came first
Feathers predate flight. Since the 1990s, fossils from Liaoning in China have shown filaments, downy tufts and fully vaned feathers on animals that plainly could not fly, from small compsognathids to relatives of Tyrannosaurus.
Feathers evidently evolved for insulation and display and were later co-opted for flight — a textbook case of exaptation.
What it means for the counts
Because birds are dinosaurs, Dinosauria is not extinct — roughly 11,000 species are alive right now.
DinoAtlas tags avian taxa separately, so a count of dinosaur species can deliberately include or exclude the living ones. Most totals you see quoted elsewhere are non-avian only.

- Are birds really dinosaurs?
- Yes. Birds are nested inside the theropod branch of Dinosauria, so by definition every bird is a dinosaur.
- Did Tyrannosaurus have feathers?
- Close relatives such as Yutyrannus did. Known Tyrannosaurus skin impressions are scaly, so any feathering was probably partial.
- What does 'non-avian dinosaur' mean?
- Every dinosaur except birds — the branches that died out at the end of the Cretaceous, 66 million years ago.
