How dinosaurs are classified

The short version
Every dinosaur gets a two-part name, like Tyrannosaurus rex. The first part is the group it belongs to, the second part is the exact kind. Those groups nest inside bigger groups, all the way up to Dinosauria — so classification is really one enormous family tree.
Two-part names
Since Linnaeus in the 1750s, every described animal carries a binomial: a genus name and a species epithet, both italicised, the genus capitalised. Tyrannosaurus rex means the species rex within the genus Tyrannosaurus.
In everyday speech we usually use the genus alone — Stegosaurus, Triceratops, Velociraptor — because most famous dinosaurs have only one or two named species.
Ranks versus clades
Traditional classification stacks ranks: kingdom, phylum, class, order, family, genus, species. Modern paleontology mostly works with clades instead — named branches of the tree, each containing an ancestor and every descendant.
That is why you meet names like Theropoda, Coelurosauria and Maniraptora with no rank attached. They are simply nested branches, each one inside the last.

- Why do dinosaurs have Latin-sounding names?
- Scientific names use Latin grammar so they work in any language and stay stable. Their roots are often Greek — Tyrannosaurus rex is Greek for 'tyrant lizard' plus Latin for 'king'.
- What is the difference between a genus and a species?
- A genus is a group of closely related species. Tyrannosaurus is the genus; rex is the only widely accepted species in it.
- Are birds classified as dinosaurs?
- Yes. Birds sit inside the theropod branch, so they are dinosaurs by definition. Extinct dinosaurs are called non-avian dinosaurs.
