How a dinosaur becomes a fossil

The short version

Almost nothing becomes a fossil. An animal has to be buried fast, in the right kind of sediment, before scavengers and weather take it apart. Then groundwater slowly swaps minerals into its bones, and tens of millions of years later erosion has to expose it while someone is walking past.

Rapid burial

The single biggest filter is speed of burial. A carcass on an open plain is gone within months. One dropped into a river channel, a flooding lake margin or a collapsing dune can be sealed under sediment within days.

That bias shapes everything we know: floodplain and river deposits are over-represented, upland forest animals are nearly invisible.

Permineralisation

Bone is porous. Groundwater carrying dissolved silica, calcite or iron seeps through those pores and precipitates minerals inside them, turning the bone into a rock-hard composite that keeps its microscopic structure.

That preserved microstructure is why researchers can cut a thin section of a limb bone and count growth rings to estimate how old the animal was when it died.

Uplift and discovery

A fossil sealed in rock stays invisible until tectonic uplift and erosion bring it to the surface — and then it has only a few years of exposure before weathering destroys it.

This is why badlands, deserts and coastal cliffs produce most finds: bare rock, active erosion, no vegetation in the way.

How long does it take for a bone to fossilise?
Mineral replacement can begin within thousands of years, but the bones we call dinosaur fossils have typically been in the ground for 66 to 230 million years.
Is a dinosaur fossil real bone?
It is the original bone structure with minerals filling and replacing the organic parts — the shape and microstructure are real, most of the original material is not.
Why are complete skeletons so rare?
Scavenging, river transport and weathering scatter bones before burial. Most occurrences in the database are a handful of elements, not a skeleton.
